8 Nights 9 Days Mt Kenya Technical Rock Climbing South East Face
Day 1: Nairobi – Naromoru – Met Station
Driving time: 3hrs | Distance from Nairobi: Approximately 200 kilometers
Depart Nairobi and drive through central Kenya to the lower slopes of Mt Kenya arriving park gate (alt.3050m) in time for lunch. After enjoying our picnic lunch, start an acclimatization hike in the tropical forests of Mt. Kenya to arrive at the Met Station camp (alt.3300m) in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Met Station Hut (9km about 3-4hrs)
Day 2: Met Station – Mackinders
Hiking time: 7hrs | Distance: Approximately 14kms | Habitat: Montane forest
After breakfast, leave Met station towards Mackinder's camp for dinner and overnight. Lunch enroute (14kms about 6-7 hrs) Alt 4200m
Day 3 & 4: Mackinders – Two Tarns / Point John (on these two days, we will give you an option in collaboration with our guide to decide which day to attempt Point John and Two Tarns respectively depending on the prevailing weather conditions)
These two days are preserved for acclimatizing by visiting Two Tarns or Point John (alt 4883m) before attempting the daring Nelion peak standing tall at 5188m and Batian at 5199m. Walk to the base of the climb and back to Mackinders Camp for lunch and dinner (3-4 hrs)
Day 5: Mackinders – Lenana Summit – Austrian Hut (Top Hut)
Hiking time: 4hrs to Point Lenana Peak, 2hrs to Top Hut | Distance: Approximately 5kms ascent
Habitat: Stone scree, ice-capped summit and Moorland
Predawn starts from Mackinders to summit point Lenana Alt 4985m for sunrise and after that descend down after taking photos to the Austrian Hut for breakfast, dinner, and overnight. After resting, spend the day scouting the area and preparing for Nelion Rock climbing.
Day 6 & 7: Austrian Hut – Nelion – Batian – Top Hut – Shiptons Camp
Early breakfast at 0400hrs start hiking to the base and start climbing at 0600hrs accompanied by our technical guide crossing the Lewis glacier, traversing the gate of mist to Batian. Spend the night at Ian Howell hut and back to Top Hut if the weather is favorable. After breakfast, descend further to Shiptons Camp for dinner and overnight. NB: Summiting will be determined by the prevailing weather condition at the time of climbing i.e. snow / wind.
Day 8: Shipton's camp – Old Moses
After breakfast, descend leisurely to Old Moses camp (3200m) for overnight with lunch enroute enjoying the scenery of moorlands and forest along the way.
Day 9: Old Moses – Sirimon Gate – Nairobi
After breakfast and feeling like achievers and we surely are, it is easy to enjoy the cool mountain weather. We depart the camp to connect with the transfer vehicle to our onward destination.
Any extra day will cost KES 7,000 & USD 190 per person for citizens/residents and non-residents respectively
