We usually endeavor to indulge in a hike once every month. February was fast going down without having firmed up on a trail. So one of our avid hikers calls us and insists that he needed to hike up Rurimeria. You may have heard stories about Rurimeria and how people have gotten lost along the trails of this treacherous hiking route on the Aberdare Ranges. Thanks to the goal oriented pavers such as bucket list adventures, kevo wilderness who have scaled the route several times in conjunction with Kenya Wildlife Services to mark the route with ribbons.
So up we rise and leave Nairobi by 0500 hrs on Saturday in the company of 6 hikers arriving at the base of the Aberdare ranges KWS offices at 0730 hrs to pick up our accompanying rangers. Then proceeded to the the starting point which takes another 1.5 hrs drive on a rough road.
We begin our hike by 0945 hrs on a fairly difficult and steep stretch which takes us 3 hrs before approaching the moorland of vast splendor and natural greenery beauty of thousands of arcarage of land. We get to view the 7 peaks of Aberdare as well as encounter some patches of bogs.
This was such a rewarding experience after descending to the base by 1750 hrs to begin our journey back to Nairobi.
It wasn’t until we sat down in the vehicle when our ligaments and every unutilized muscle gave in and started to communicate the discomfort we caused them during the hike. Deep down our hearts we were satisfied that this should be the absolute feeling of conquering the daunted peak of Rurimeria hill.
It stands tall at 3,860m asl with an altitude of 12,670ft and it is the third-highest peak of the Aberdares.
